How to get rid of dandruff? All anti-dandruff treatments

    How do dandruff form?

Dandruff affects more than 50% of the population. The people concerned then have only one idea in mind: get rid of them. Where do the dandruff come from? How to treat them? Julien Wintenberger, Communication Manager at Procter & Gamble and Marine Larnaud, Brand Manager at Head & Shoulders, answer our questions.

What are the causes of dandruff?

The skin of the scalp is composed of two layers: the dermis and the epidermis. It is renewed approximately every 28 days thanks to the formation of new epidermal cells which will eliminate the dead cells by pushing them outside the epidermis.

    How to remove dandruff?

Dandruff appears when a fungus called Malassezia (non-contagious) proliferates and causes a disruption of this cell renewal. The cycle then ranges from 28 days to about 5 days. The dead cells no longer have time to detach gradually, they cling to one another and concentrate in the form of dander (thin skin slices from the outermost layer of the epidermis to the surface of the leather Hairy), then become what are called dandruff.

    Dry film or oily film?

There are different anti-dandruff treatments adapted to each type of hair and dandruff, explains Julien Wintenberger, head of communication at Procter & Gamble.

Shampoos and anti-dandruff treatments treat the scalp by regulating the excess or the lack of sebum and by slowing down the proliferation of the fungus.

Good to know: the dandruff are located at the level of the root of the hair and the use of an anti-dandruff shampoo can damage the points. Think of moisturizing them with a daily care such as a conditioner or oil. If you have dry dandruff, you can make a nourishing mask once a week on all hair.

A dermatologist may prescribe lotions based on corticosteroids, but only for very severe conditions such as psoriasis (read more on psoriasis).

Some plants can be very effective against dandruff. Rosemary has antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Propolis, a derivative of honey, is known for its antiseptic and bactericidal properties. (See our selection of honey beauty products).

Many essential oils can also be used to treat dandruff naturally. Among them, tea tree essential oil cleanses and soothes the scalp, sage regulates excess sebum and eucalyptus is a very good anti-inflammatory.

N.B: it is necessary to respect the right dosages and not to improvise chemist, under penalty of aggravating the situation and to see appear even more problems related to dandruff. It is necessary to seek advice from a specialist before using vegetable extracts or essential oils.

Some dietary supplements and vitamins can also help get rid of dandruff. Prefer vitamin A (eggs, dairy products), vitamin B6 (whole grains, salmon or banana) and vitamin E (fatty fish, hazelnuts and almonds). Also draw on the micronutrients side. Selenium, for example, has an antioxidant effect and allows the body to produce an enzyme (with the help of vitamin E) that protects cell membranes from oxidation caused by free radicals. They are mainly found in Brazil nuts or in canned tuna.
