What are its main objectives of the Ecoute Dopage green number?

In November 1998, the Ministry of Youth and Sports launched the National Green Number Ecoute Dopage 0800 15 2000. Since then, this service has been a real success, paradoxically worrying about the scale of the phenomenon. Psychologist and coordinator of this service, Dorian Martinez answers our questions and warns about certain food supplements and behaviors in the gym.

Is there a typical portrait of callers?

Dorian Martinez: Our team of psychologists and sports doctors analyzes the situations encountered by callers by providing them with the information they need. Without playing the moralizing, avoiding dramatization or trivialization, our service can respond to requests for help in decision-making in the face of the temptation to doping or the will to stop, etc. Preserving confidentiality and anonymity, our toll free national number runs from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 8 pm. If necessary, we can also refer callers locally to medical antennas for prevention and fight against doping.

What are the main requests?

Dorian Martinez: These are mainly men (almost 75%), amateur athletes or a departmental or regional level for the most part, between 18 and 35 years old. Despite a high proportion of adults (82%), this number is also the subject of numerous requests for information from sports teenagers. But I do not want to give a too restrictive image of people who call

Do some sports come back more frequently?

Dorian Martinez: Mainly, "Is this product a doping agent?". But the requests differ depending on the caller. Thus, the amateur athlete will have a tendency to ask questions about the consequences of a given substance on his / her health, while the top athlete will investigate whether this product can be detected.

On which substances are the main requests for information?

It is quite surprising to see cannabis among doping agents, it is more likely to be considered as recreational ...

Between doping and hard drugs, are there risks of drug addiction?

You also talked about food supplements ...

Do athletes with diseases requiring prohibited products have to give up competitions?

In order to answer these questions, we have lists of illicit products (drugs and drugs) regularly updated through a ministerial decree which is now based on the World Anti-Doping Code adopted by the International Olympic Committee for the upcoming Olympic Games and the federations Sporting events.

Dorian Martinez: The sports mainly mentioned (which do not necessarily mean those who are mainly affected by doping) are: bodybuilding, athletics and cycling. While athletics and cycling show a willingness to fight doping, bodybuilding remains a serious concern.

In the gyms, circulate highly doping products, taken without any medical supervision. Sometimes suffering from real body image disorders, some men set goals (taking x kilos of muscles) in disregard of their health.

Dorian Martinez: There is the "classical" doped pharmacopoeia: anabolics and steroids, stimulants, analgesic, growth hormone, etc.

Some trends also appear

Dorian Martinez: Contrary to what the general public still think, cannabis is a real doping product, which can reduce stress, release muscles and so on. Used to increase performance, it is not consumed "recreationally" but with a precise dosage, the result of a self-experimentation by the sporting fraudster.

Some calls are also linked to the fear of doping controls, which may reveal the presence of cannabis used several days earlier for reasons more festive than doping. This product remains indeed very long detectable in the urines.

Dorian Martinez: In my opinion, doping is the opposite of addiction. Never have we known athletes dependent on doping, but rather addictions to sport. The approach is different: the drug addict seeks to "drug" with one or two products, while the doped seeks to achieve a specific goal (victory, muscle gain ...) juggling with 5 to 10 or even 20 different products. However, doping can be an aggravating factor for people who are already fragile and addictive, especially during certain periods at greater risk: end of career, injuries ...

Dorian Martinez: Faced with these products, legislation seems to have dropped. Unlike drugs that need to be studied and checked draconian before they are put on the market, dietary supplements can contain just about anything. As some studies have shown, 15% to 25% of these products contain prohibited doping substances.

Some athletes can take advantage of this legal uncertainty and then invoke good faith. The case of tennisman Rudsesky is rather troubling in this field ... For the most part, however, the absence of information on their origin and composition poses a real problem for the consumer who wishes to use this "aid" without taking risks for Health or bypass the law. That is why we are working to put in place a label to ensure the absence of products prohibited under anti-doping legislation.

Dorian Martinez: No longer has the legislation evolved since the entry into force of the World Anti-Doping Code, which will symbolically enter into force on 13 August - opening day of the Olympic Games. This text allows the taking of any medical product if the opinion of an independent medical authority justifies it. This high authority shall consist of three persons, per country or federation. This is a positive development for patients who wish to continue to play sports but may prove dangerous for certain fraudsters who would not hesitate to put their health at risk.

Dorian Martinez is also responsible for two doping sites. For more information, visit www.dopage.com and www.vivresport.com.

Calls for anabolic steroids, blood doping and stimulants are more important, while references to EPO and growth hormone decrease as if, alerted by the dangerousness of these products, athletes return to products falsely Creatine is no longer topical, especially thanks to the scientific information linked to its lack of efficacy The food supplements, whose composition is often blurred, are the object Growing concern: Cannabis is still the primary reason for appeals, highlighting the strong concern of sports teenagers.
