Causes of trauma

Unlike some sports such as skiing, which have seen a decrease in the number of sprained ankles thanks to the generalization of shoes that completely immobilize the ankle, it remains to foot and ruby extremely exposed.

Nature of the lesion

The ankle sprain is the result of false lateral movements. These occur during the race (change of direction), by placing the foot incorrectly on an unstable or irregular ground or by skidding on a ground in poor condition (exceptional in the competition sportsman) or Rolling on the ball.

Appropriate therapeutics

The diagnosis, which is relatively easy, is based on a clinical examination in the field. In case of any clinical doubt, an ankle radio will eliminate a fracture of the malleoli, the astragalus and the base of the 5th metatarsal. An MRI can be useful in assessing the severity of some apparently more complex lesions.

The possible complications

Treatment is exceptionally surgical unless there is an associated luxation. Most of the time, the top athlete receives functional treatment. The splints correctly immobilize the ankle at the level of the external ligament while preserving the flexion extension function which allows to walk. This accelerates the healing process and makes it possible not to expose the athlete to the phenomenon of muscular melting linked to a prolonged immobilization. The functional treatment is prescribed for an average duration of 3 weeks. The secondary treatments (ligamentoplasty) are also effective on recurrent sprains, in the presence of a chronic instability on a ligament that would not have healed on its own.

The badly treated sprains give painful sequelae in the form of instability, pain, blockages almost inevitable in the footballer who has spent many years. It is the origin of an extremely chronic pathology, which can go as far as osteoarthritis, and which sometimes requires surgical treatment to remove osteophytes (small peri-articular bone excrescences) and foreign bodies commonly found at the level Of the bearing joints. Under the influence of osteoarthritis, the ankle tends to become stiff and painful.
