Overview of Treatment and High Blood Pressure

When the blood pressure is over a certain measurement the doctor is going to talk to them about changing their own lifestyle, practice a nutritional diet, stop smoking and get more physical activity in more often. Treatment is recommended to lower a blood pressure if it is at a certain number. When it comes to treating high blood pressure it may involve some lifestyle changes and drug therapy depending on what the doctor feels is right.

Checking Blood Pressure Lifestyle Chances

There are important steps to take when it comes to preventing and treating blood pressure. Patients must learn how to practice a healthy lifestyle and they can lower their blood pressure by doing the following things:

  • Limiting their alcohol intake
  • Getting more exercise
  • Reducing the amount of sodium in their diet
  • Eating a diet that has more vegetables, fruits and less saturated fat
  • Quit smoking
  • Lose weight if they are overweight

On top of lowering your blood pressure these are measures that will help your overall health.

High Blood Pressure Treatment and Drugs

There are a couple of drugs that can be used to help treat high blood pressure that include the following:

  • Alpha-agonists
  • Alpha-blockers
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Beta-blockers
  • Diuretics
  • ARBs
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Renin inhibitors
  • Combination medicine treatment

As a first therapy choice, diuretics are recommend for the majority of people who do have high blood pressure. The doctor may start a medicine that isn't a diuretic as a first therapy choice if you have a given medical problem. An Ace inhibitor is likely a choice for someone who has diabetes. If one of the drugs doesn't work there are many other types to choose from. If the blood pressure is more than a certain measurement the doctor is likely to consider putting you on more than one drug as a combination drug.

Treatment for High Blood Pressure and Post Treatment

After starting the drug therapy for high blood pressure the patient needs to see the doctor at least once a month until they have reached their measurement goal. The doctor will also look at the potassium level in the blood as well as the electrolytes and kidney health. When the goal for the blood pressure has been reached the patient should go see their doctor between 3-6 months. This is going to depend on whether or not the patient has other medical conditions.
