Medicine may be used for lifestyle changes and to help manage IBS symptoms.

There isn't one medicine that is shown to be effective in treating long term IBS.

Most of the time the type of medicine chosen is based on the type of symptoms. If diarrhea is the most common symptom, the person may use antidiarrheals.

Diarrhea Treatment

The following are medicines that may be prescribed to the patient to help treat the following symptoms:

  • Alosetron is used for women who have severe diarrhea and for those who don't respond to any other treatments.
  • A bile acid binding agent will prevent bile acids from affecting the colon.
  • Antidiarrheals are used to slow down the intestinal movements.

Constipation Symptoms

There are many drugs that treat difficult constipation and it may not improve during home treatment. The majority of these medications are available without getting a prescription from the doctor. The drugs that treat constipation are as follows:

  • Osmotic laxatives work by keeping fluits in the intestines. This extra fluid allows the stool to pass through easier.
  • Polyethylene Glycoal helps the stool hold onto more water, making it much easier to pass through.
  • Stimulant laxatives speed up the movement of still through the intestines by irritating it's lining.
  • Linaclotide helps the bowel movements occur more often.
  • Lubiprostone increases fluid in the intestine as well.

Cramping and Discomfort

These medications are used for patients who suffer from severe cramping and discomfort:

  • Anticholinergics help prevent cramping spasms
  • Antidepressants can help with pain in low doses

Depression and Anxiety

The following are medicines that can be used if the condition results in depression or anxiety:

  • Antidepressants such as Prozac can be helpful if you are dealing with IBS and depression
  • Antianxiety agents help with the anxiety

There are a few medicines that have been proven to help with the medicine and side effects. These medicines should be used for specific symptoms that affect your daily activity.

If you have any other conditions that trigger IBS, medicine may be prescribed for that illness.
